Many Newport Beach and Laguna Beach restaurants were nominated in various categories, with several bringing home the top award. Hosted by Simon Majumdar with help from Neil Saavedra, Golden Foodie statuettes were awarded in 17 categories (in between screenings of several fun videos featuring nominated chefs). Wines were courtesy of Bouchaine Vineyards. Then it was on to the Marriott’s ballroom, with tables adorned with edible (and drinkable) art from Roederer, cheese and fruit platters from Melissa’s Produce, fresh baked bread by OC Baking Co., shortbread sticks by Mixed Bakery, dark chocolate madeleines by Sweet Surrender Specialty Desserts & Pastries, and mini donuts by Miss Mini Donuts.

The sold-out event began in the Marriott’s Rose Garden, where guests indulged in wine, cocktails, craft beer, and small bites from Angelina’s Pizzeria, Filomena’s, Pascal & Baja Shellfish Farms, Mix Mix Kitchen + Bar / Terrace by Mix Mix, Legado Bar + Kitchen, Urbana, Haute Productions, Wreckless, AnQi by House of An, Cambalache, Villa Roma and Georgia’s. The rest of our meal hit the table 15 minutes after ordering. We ordered an appetizer and drinks and the brussel sprouts hit the table in less than 5 minutes, long before our drinks arrived. We were immediately next to a couple sitting at a larger high top who were being overly affectionate throughout our meal. We were offered a very narrow 2 person high top in the bar area (with two other larger high tops available).

Not really sure why a later reservation takes priority over a 6:30 PM reservation. We were told all those tables were reserved for later reservations. We told her we would not accept that table and asked for a table in the dining room. She attempted to seat us in the very back of the plastic tent directly under a heater that was blasting down on the table. The hostess walked us through the restaurant, passing several empty tables, out the side door to a plastic sided add on along the side of the building. Had a reservation and arrived a few minutes early. One of the worst fine dining experiences we have ever had.
